With a powerhouse food, art and bar scene, it's no surprise that a new study by CreditDonkey.com has determined Houston is one of the nation's Top 10 cities for people in their twenties.
The study used a number of factors to create the Top 10 list, including the percent of the population in their twenties, the fair market rent for a two bedroom apartment, the number of bars in relation to population, population growth and the unemployment rate.
Houston's population growth is at 2.1 percent, the third highest on the list, and 14.4 percent of the city's population is between the age of 20 and 29.
Houston, coming in at No. 9, is the third city in Texas in the Top 10, with Austin at No. 1 and San Antonio at No. 5.
Although Houston's unemployment rate is about one percent higher than Austin's, the average rent for a two bedroom apartment in Houston is more than $100 cheaper — a significant amount for someone in their twenties. Also, Houston's population growth is at 2.1 percent, the third highest on the list, and 14.4 percent of the city's population is between the age of 20 and 29.
The study also cites many Houston activities that would appeal to twentysomethings, such as outdoor performances at Discovery Green and Miller Outdoor Theatre, the annual Art Car Parade — and even David Adickes' presidents head sculptures in The Heights.
Austin's place at the No. 1 spot is fairly expected. It comes in first for population growth and ranks in the top five for every category except for rent costs. With warm weather, a great bar and live music scene, and a strong job market, Austin certainly offers a lot to twentysomethings.
